Fire at a Smithfield apartment complex Sunday afternoon damaged six apartments and displaced 15 residents, Fire Chief Paul Whitehurst said.

The fire started shortly before 2 p.m. in the ceiling or attic of an apartment at 2238 Kay Drive, Whitehurst said. Flames spread to five other units.

Authorities are still investigating how the fire started, but said it was accidental.

No one was injured.
