Find all the NC candidates running for Congress and statewide office in 2024
As the March 5 primary and Nov. 5, 2024, general elections approach, the field of North Carolina candidates for congressional and statewide offices is growing.
Whatever happens in the upcoming elections, voters are likely to see many new faces in the state’s most powerful roles. An unusually large number of incumbents are expected not to seek reelection in 2024. Term limits on Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper have led to a battle at the top of the state ticket that’s caused many officials to choose to run for governor rather than seek reelection to their current role.
Numerous judicial positions will also be up for election, including one of the seven North Carolina Supreme Court seats, three seats on the Court of Appeals and dozens of local trial court judges.
And newly redrawn U.S. House of Representatives districts, approved in October, have created new opportunities for Republican candidates while causing some Democratic incumbents to bow out. North Carolina has one of the nation’s biggest U.S. House delegations, with 14 seats, and it’s possible that nearly half of those seats will soon be held by newcomers.
The biggest changes, however, are expected in the executive branch.
The lieutenant governor, attorney general and treasurer are all stepping down to try replacing Cooper as governor — as is a recently retired state Supreme Court justice — and in the process, they’re opening up their old jobs to new politicians.
State Auditor Beth Wood plans to step down De. 15, resigning amid charges related to her use of state-issued vehicles. And Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson is stepping down after just one term in office. All told, it’s likely that most of the 10 executive branch officials who make up the Council of State will be brand new once the 2024 elections are done.
Here are the lists of all declared candidates for statewide and congressional seats. We’ll update this list as the Dec. 15 filing deadline approaches.
