Train slams into car on Fayetteville Street in Durham

A train crashed into a car Friday night on Fayetteville Street in Durham on Friday night.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., the Amtrak Piedmont Train 78 en route from Charlotte to Raleigh crashed into a car that was on the tracks.

Officers at the scene told WRAL News that nobody was hurt. They said the car stalled on the tracks, but everyone inside was able to get out before the train crashed into the car.

Here's how one passenger on the train described the experience.

"Well first we heard the breaks and then it kind of ricocheted throughout the entire car and it just came to a complete stop," said Nile Gaston. "Over the intercom they were like, 'We hit a car. We didn't see it, but we hit it.' And at first, we saw all of the police officers, and they were running down."

Police escorted passengers to safety, and they had to find alternative routes from Durham to Raleigh..

The intersection was closed for about an hour while police investigated. Fayetteville and East Pettigrew streets are both open again.

The crash is currently under investigation.

There are no reports of injuries at this time.
