Fayetteville set to hire new city manager

The City Council is expected to appoint Ted Voorhees to its city manager position next week, Fayetteville officials said Monday.

A council vote is set for July 9, after the council and Voorhees finalize his contract.

“We are excited about Ted joining our team,” Mayor Tony Chavonne said in a statement. “He brings a great deal of professional experience and excitement to the position. We were blessed with several exceptional candidates and look forward to taking this important step as we continue to move Fayetteville forward."

Voorhees has served as deputy city manager in Durham for the past 10 years. Before that, he was the assistant city manager in Wilmington for two years, city manager in King for five years and town manager of Bowling Green, Va., for two years.

“I am eager to bring my family to Fayetteville and become a part of this great community,” he said in a statement. “The City Council has shared several key goals with me that I will begin addressing immediately. I also look forward to meeting with residents, community leaders, city staff and other stakeholders to find out more about our shared vision for success."

Voorhees holds a bachelor's degree from American University and earned a Master of Public Administration from George Mason University.

City Manager Dale Iman resigned in March after a rift developed between him and the council over police searches during traffic stops. Assistant City Manager Kristoff Bauer has served as interim manager since then.
