Father charged in infant's death

Police on Tuesday charged a Goldsboro man in the death of his 6-month-old daughter last week.

Ronald Everette Smith, 24, of 117 Hines Drive, Lot 8, was charged with murder and was being held without bond in the Wayne County Jail.

Diamond Nicole Smith died Friday afternoon in the pediatric intensive care unit at Pitt Memorial Hospital, in Greenville, two days after she was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital with fractured ribs and bleeding on the brain, police said.

Police said the cause of death was an abusive head injury.
