It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon as my family and I drove southbound on a moderately traveled 4 lane hwy in Durham, NC. When suddenly faster than my wife could react to a 50% off shoe sale at Sax…. A skittering creature gave impetus to my once calm and collective driving style. After avoiding a near five car pile up, I had time to attempt to identify what this mysterious and near criminal creature actually was. With two overly compassionate children shouting “save him daddy… save him daddy.” My fatherly instincts kicked in and I abruptly pulled over; jumped out and started my chase for this tiny and nebulous creature. I use the word “chase” as a mild term for what would later become a heroic half marathon that nearly put me in cardiac arrest. With a wife yelling “git in the car honey….You’re gona git shot” and my only two fan club members screaming “save him daddy…go daddy go!” I continued my endless chase to catch this tiny track and field Olympic metal winning varmint.

After running through a not-so-safe impoverished neighborhood and avoiding trespassing confrontations; I finally cornered this creature against a rusty riding mower and the under plumbing beneath a scary looking trailer home. Gasping for what I hoped wouldn’t be my last breath of warm Durham humidity….I wiped the sweat from my eyes only to see a tiny yellow and brown piece of fuzz with 2 webbed feet half of its total body size and a ½ inch nub for a beak protruding from it’s hard little head.

In the five minute walk, and I say walk back to the suburban with cheering children handing out of the windows. I found myself unconsciously creating a special bond with this tiny little fellow that we would later name “Lucky.” I’m not sure if we named him Lucky because he was lucky that he didn’t get pan-caked in the hwy or if I was lucky that I didn’t get shot for trespassing in a rough neighborhood. Yes, it was a 2 day old duckling that we named Lucky that caused all of the excitement that day…..and yes the tiny fuzz ball now calls my pool and back porch home sweet home. Bogie my chocolate lab shares his bed and water bowl with him and my girls carry him around everywhere they go.

Today Lucky is doing well living the high life at the Peterson Swim and Relaxation rescue resort with an all you can eat bowl of crushed up Cheerios and bean spouts. After four straight days of cleaning up duck poo…. Gina and I are not sure what is in store for little Lucky’s future….. Does anyone know any good duck recipes? Only kidding!!!! Ha!

A family told WRAL News that they rescued a duckling that almost got hit and caused cars to scatter along a four-lane highway in Durham last Saturday.

Steve Peterson said that his children – but not his wife – urged him to stop the car and get out to rescue that animal that had caused him to swerve along the road.

He pursued the creature though a neighborhood on "a heroic half-marathon that nearly put me in cardiac arrest," Peterson wrote. The animal finally got cornered between a rusty riding lawn mower and a trailer.

"Gasping for what I hoped wouldn't be my last breath of warm Durham humidity, I wiped the sweat from my eyes only to see a tiny yellow and brown piece of fuzz, with two webbed feet half of its total body size and a half-inch numb for a beak protruding from its hard little head," he said.

The Peterson family took the two-day-old ducking home and named him "Lucky."

"I'm not sure if we named him Lucky, because he was lucky that he didn't get pancaked on the highway or if I was lucky that I didn't get shot for trespassing in a rough neighborhood," Peterson said.

Lucky calls the pool home, shares a bed and a water bowl with the family's chocolate lab and gets carried around everywhere by the girls, he said.

"Lucky is doing well living the high life at the Peterson Swim and Relaxation rescue resort with an all-you-can-eat bowl of crushed-up Cheerios and bean sprouts," Peterson wrote.
