Threat brings extra police presence at Athens Drive High School

Students at Athens Drive Magnet High School will see extra security on campus Friday in the wake of a racist threat about a school shooting.

Principal Steve Mares of Athens Drive Magnet High School sent out a message to parents last week to make them aware.

The written threat included a racial slur and the date Friday, Jan. 13, according to Mares. It was scribbled on a table at the school, and was photographed then posted on social media.

School leaders said they have not yet found the person who wrote the threat but told parents law enforcement doesn't think the threat is "highly credible."

Mares said more police and security staff will be on hand Friday out of caution.

Students and parents can report safety concerns to an anonymous tip line at 919-856-1911.
