Second suspect arrested in murder of Holly Springs woman

Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said the ex-wife of a man charged last week in the disappearance and murder of a Holly Springs woman is also facing charges.

Freeman said Jarlyn Sluss has been charged with accessory after-the-fact to murder and obstruction of justice in the case involving Monica Moynan. She was the 23-year-old Holly Springs woman who was reported missing last July by her mother. Last week, Moynan's ex-boyfriend, Brian Sluss, 44, was arrested in Virginia.

Moynan's body has not been found.

Jarlyn Sluss has been processed and is being held under a $750,000 bond. Her first court appearance is Wednesday at 12:50 at the Wake County Justice Center.

Moynan's mother, Melanie Tucker, released a statement Tuesday evening on the arrest:

"We are so glad to see this second arrest in the pursuit of #justiceforMoni.

"Jarlyn Sluss had several months to contact us or the HSPD with any information that could have alerted us sooner that something had happened to Monica. Brian called her in a panic on 4/7/2019 according to warrants. They maintained regular contact after this which was not typical. She knew something, but instead of coming forward, she chose to help him which included impersonating Monica as also stated in warrants. And this is just what we know. Ten months later, she has continued to withhold. Justice will now be served."

Officials said Brian Sluss was the last person to see Moynan alive, according to search warrants released earlier in the case. His actions after her disappearance raised suspicions. On May 5, he was arrested at his parents' home in Bluefield, Va.

Brian Sluss' regular contact with his ex-wife, Jarlyn Sluss, via text phone and Skype over the past six months led investigators to search her Garner home.

Investigators were "walking around in the woods, all around the house," a neighbor said. "The last time they were here, they were going through the house, storage room, storage building. There were several investigators."

They took some soil, a baseball bat and baby items.

In one phone call, recorded by Jarlyn Sluss with investigators present, Brian Sluss told his ex-wife, "I really don't think like there's anything. Because there's no evidence or anything like that."

In the same conversation, Brian Sluss asked his ex-wife, "You don't think I should run?"
