Editorial: What they say and where they stand

The following is the opinion of Capitol Broadcasting Company

North Carolina’s most powerful Republican, state Senate leader Phil Berger of Rockingham County, has endorsed fellow Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson for governor.

“I think philosophically, he's generally in the right place,” Berger said this week.

So, just what is a philosophy that’s “in the right place?” according to Berger.

Let’s just take it from Robinson himself:

“We're adhering to unwise counsel of those who believe in what is colloquially called ‘climate change.’ I have tried over and over again to explain to these people about climate change. It happens four times a year. Right now it is summer. Soon it will be fall. Then it will be winter.  After that it will be spring and then the cycle starts over again.  That’s the only kind of climate change that I believe in.” -- Sept. 15, 2023

“This foolishness about Hitler disarming MILLIONS of Jews and then marching them off to concentration camps is a bunch of hogwash.” -- March 19, 2018

“It is absolutely AMAZING to me that people who know so little about their true history and REFUSE to acknowledge the pure sorry state of their current condition can get so excited about a fictional ‘hero’ created by an agnostic Jew and put to film by satanic Marxist. “How can this trash, that was only created to pull the shekels out of your Schvartze pockets, invoke any pride?” -- Feb. 19, 2018

“A spoiled, angry, disobedient CHILD shot and killed 17 of his classmates (at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida), and now spoiled, angry, know it all CHILDREN are trying to tell law abiding ADULTS that we must give up our Constitutional RIGHT to own certain weapons. Cue Rod Serling because this must be an episode of the Twilight Zone? David Hogg and the rest of these silly little immature "media prosti-tots" need to grab a passy, have seat in time out, and shut up. … If, two days before this shooting, a hard nosed nonsense conservative had walked into that school and put into place the ideals and principles that would have avoided that massacre, you spoiled little bastards would have kicked and screamed like babies in a crib.” -- Feb. 27, 2018

“The ‘Teachers March’ is a bad joke being staged by silly hypocrites and is based on a false narrative. The fact that so many teachers are taking part is a sad indication of why public schools are FAILING so miserably.” -- May 1, 2019

“I am so sick of seeing and hearing people STILL talk about Nazis and Hitler and how evil and manipulative they were. NEWS FLASH PEOPLE, THE NAZIS (National Socialist) ARE GONE! We did away with them. However....... Communist created the Marxist Socialist that CURRENTLY control Europe, fill the ranks of OUR OWN Democratic Party, and control our mass media. Compared with the Communist the Nazis were upstart amateurs in terms of manipulation and MURDER. It's hard for me to understand how so many can remain blind to the fact that COMMUNISM, not Nazism was, and still is, the BIGGEST threat to American freedom. I don’t care how much you cut yourself up, drug yourself up and dress yourself up, you still either one of two things — you either a man or a woman. You might be a cut up, dressed up, drugged up ugly man or woman, but you still a man or a woman, and I don’t care who doesn’t like it.” -- Nov. 14, 2021

Those are not words of someone seeking to unite North Carolinians to a common good and purpose. They don’t represent a philosophy of someone seeking to build a better state.

Those who say these things, and those who endorse them, should not be elected to public office.
