East Carolina University said drink tampering led to a sexual assault at a fraternity house on Halloween weekend.

In an alert sent to students, school officials said a report was received on Tuesday about the drink tampering and sexual assault at the Theta Chi Fraternity House.

The assault took place on Oct. 29, according to the alert, but a description of the assailant was not available.

It is illegal to knowingly distribute food or drinks that contain any harmful substance.

NBC affiliate WITN reports that this isn't the first drink tampering incident that has happened at the fraternity. Last year, university officials investigated reports that someone gave three people pre-poured drinks containing some form of a controlled substance in the beverages.

Students were asked to not accept drinks at social gatherings even if they are pre-packaged beverages. Students were also asked to report any suspicious criminal activity as soon as possible.
