Durham man hits mom's SUV, causing her death

A Durham woman was hit and killed by a vehicle driven by her son early Sunday.

Durham police said Beverly Bennett, 51, was a passenger in a a 2006 Ford Expedition, driven by her daughter, 35-year-old Connie Shanae Bennett. The vehicle was on the shoulder of the road in the 1200 block of Midland Terrace with a flat tire.

Beverly Bennett was attempting to get out of the passenger side of the vehicle, when it was struck by a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant, driven by Beverly Bennett's son, Corey Bennett. The 29-year old was arriving to assist the women. The impact caused the Ford Expedition to roll over.

Beverly Bennett was pronounced dead at the scene.

"She was a good person. She was very nice," said former neighbor Keyala Dill. "She was always checking on us. She was a good person, she was very sociable."

Those who knew the family said that they can't imagine what Corey Bennett is going through after the incident and said that the family is extremely close.

"They were really close, said Dill. "A close family period, so I know he's torn up."

Former neighbors remembered their last conversations with Beverly Bennett, whom they affectionately called Ms. BB, and how they used to look out for each other.

"She came over here because she wanted me to get her mail and she wanted me to check her mailbox because she wanted to make sure everything was coming and she left her phone number and that was the last time I saw and heard from her," said former neighbor Kincoma Quinn.

A spokesman for the Durham Police said they are investigating whether alcohol was involved in the incident.
