Durham police are investigating a shooting that occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Monday on Holloway Street near Guthrie Avenue.

Officers were dispatched to a disturbance with a weapon call at 8:53 p.m. When they arrived, they found a vehicle that had crashed into a tree.

The driver of the vehicle, Rayshaun Cotton, 29, of Durham, had been shot several times and was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

Witnesses told police that Cotton's vehicle was being chased by another vehicle on Holloway Street when the incident occurred. The second vehicle was described as a light-colored, box-style car similar to a Oldsmobile Cutlass.

The second car may have sustained damage during the incident. There was no description of a suspect.
