Durham police said that an officer shot and wounded a person who fired a gun after a traffic stop at Dearborn Drive and Ader Street Tuesday night.

Officers stopped a Nissan Altima for a traffic violation around 10:40 p.m. A passenger got out of the car and fired several shots at officers, police said. Officers returned fire, hitting the passenger in the abdomen and leg, police said.

Paramedics transported the passenger, Elliott Josiah Pierce, 26, of Durham, to Duke University Hospital for treatment.

The officers were not injured.

The Altima was found abandoned a short distance away, police said. Officers are searching for the driver and a second passenger.

The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation.
