Durham neighbors receive letters over pro-BLM signs in yards

Durham residents in one neighborhood are saddened after receiving anonymous warning letters over signs in their yard.

One neighbor received a warning letter for having a ‘Black Lives Matter’ sign in her yard.

Another family received two letters a sign that has multiple statements such as 'No human is illegal' and 'love is love.'

They’re convinced the anonymous letters are coming from someone in the neighborhood.

For more than a month, Cynthia Beckett has had the ‘Black Lives Matter’ sign in her yard.

"Right now in this current climate, I really think we need to focus on black lives matter," she said.

The statement hit a nerve. Beckett received an anonymous letter in the mail asking her to take it down.

"Black lives matter is racial and hatred to some whites," Beckett said, reading from the letter she'd found.

"Here's what hurts for me," Beckett said. "When they say [it's] a hate sign, this tells me I need it up even more."

A street over, Mark and Kay Cee Sprintz received two similar letters.

Their yard sign, posted for about four days, supports multiple causes other than Black Lives Matter.

"This subdivision does not need to try a sign war that may lead to big problems," the letter left at the Sprintz residence read.

The letter, stamped and mailed to ‘occupant’ tells neighbors to ‘heed the warning, not a threat.’

It tells them covenants for the subdivision prevent them from display such signs.

The Homeowners Association tells WRAL News that it did not send the letter to the Sprintz home and that it supports the Black Lives Matter movement.

"We'd rather have open dialoge than to be scared," Kay Cee Sprintz said.

Underneath the yard sign..is another sign inviting people to spark a discussion if they want to know more.

One of the families has filed a report with Durham Police.
