A Durham man died Saturday of injuries he suffered in a three-vehicle wreck a week ago, police said Monday.

William Allen Merritt, 60, died at Duke University Hospital. He was the only person injured in the wreck.

The wreck occurred on the morning of May 3, when Merritt's northbound Chevrolet Aveo clipped the back of a northbound Nissan Maxima driven by Kathryn Willis, 54, of Mebane, on Interstate 85 near the Cole Mill Road exit.

Merritt's car then skidded into the back of a state Department of Transportation dump truck, which was parked on the left shoulder of the highway so that DOT employees could remove an animal carcass from the roadway.

No charges were filed in the case.
