Durham County Library locations to reopen for limited walk-in hours

The Durham County Library system will reopen some of its doors for limited walk-in hours starting May 4.

Durham County regional locations — East, North, South and Southwest — and branch locations — Bragtown and Stanford L. Warren — will be open at limited capacity for one-hour walk-in visits, according to a press release. Visitors will be able to browse and check out materials and use the computers. Face masks for ages 2 and up will be required, along with a health screening and temperature checks at the door.

The Main Library will not be open for walk-in hours at this point, but library patrons can still check out books through the reservation-only Library Take-Out! servic there. The press release said that walk-in hours at the Main Library will be "forthcoming."  Library Take-Out! services at branch and regional locations end later this month.

"Opening our doors is the product of months of careful planning with Durham County Department of Public Health and leaders across Durham County Government to ensure that appropriate measures are in place to safely offer these expanded library services," said Library Director Tammy Baggett-Best in the press release. 

According to the press release, library staff will be available to provide limited assistance to issue library cards, check out material and help patrons access computers. Guests are encouraged to use the self-checkout and place holds online for pickup. Direct computer support will not be available.

"We look forward to serving our community back at our libraries as long as the circumstances continue to allow us to do so," Baggett-Best said in the release.
