The gardens are a popular place for families to explore and enjoy a picnic, but just know that parking and capacity will be limited at first.

Duke Gardens has been closed to the general public for more than a year, but here's some good news: It's reopening with limited capacity next month.

Visitors will be allowed back on the grounds from 8 a.m. to dusk, starting June 1. This is the second phase of the popular destination's opening. It reopened to Duke students, faculty and staff during limited hours on April 1, according to its website.

The sprawling garden, with open lawns, narrow trails and some gorgeous plants and flowers, is a popular spot for walking, picnics and family time.

However it's important to note that parking will only be available in the gardens' parking lot, and parking often reaches capacity on weekends. Weekday visits might be best.

"We urge phase 2 visitors to consider weekday visits or make flexible plans," the garden's website says.

Some rules if you do go once it's reopened:

  • Visitors should maintain a physical distance of at least six feet from other groups.
  • Face masks aren't required unless visitors are in crowded areas or using a restroom.
  • The garden's vending machine is not working, and the Terrace Cafe and Terrace Shop are not open. Be sure to bring some water if you go.
  • Online classes and programs will continue, but it won't offer public events or gatherings for now.

Duke Gardens' website has more information about the reopening.
