18-wheeler catches fire in Sampson County, driver rushed to hospital

An 18-wheeler hauling frozen turkeys in Sampson County exploded following a crash on Monday morning.

The driver was taken to the hospital with serious burns and injuries. WRAL News learned the back wheels of the trailer caught fire, which caused an explosion.

Sky 5 flew over the scene near the intersection of Highway 13 and Lee Allen Pope Lane.

The Spivey's Corner Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire after 10:45 a.m.

The truck belongs to M&M Transportation out of Fisher, West Virginia.

The surrounding stretch of Highway 13 will be closed Monday afternoon.
