Driver sought after box truck crashes into Raleigh's Peace Street Bridge
Raleigh police were searching Friday for the driver of a rented box truck that crashed into the Peace Street Bridge in downtown and drove off before abandoning the truck a few feet away.
Police said the crash was a hit and run but it was not clear if anyone was hurt during the overnight incident at the low-clearance bridge, which is notorious for the number of times that unsuspecting drivers have collided with it.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m., and the truck did not get stuck underneath the bridge overpass, which only has a clearance of 12 feet and 4 inches.
It was found abandoned about a half a mile away from the bridge on North West Street.
There was, however, a sizable amount of damage to the vehicle, which had an Enterprise truck rental sign on the passenger's side door and a California license plate.
A Raleigh police officer combed inside the truck, searching for who may have been behind the wheel at the time of the crash.
