Driver fires 9 shots at two Raleigh police officers, an officer fires back

Raleigh police arrested a man after they say he shot at two officers from his car Thursday night.

Around 10:49 p.m. Thursday, two Raleigh police officers were parked in a marked patrol car at the corner of Haywood and Martin streets. Police said the driver of a white car pulled up to the intersection and fired a gun nine times from the driver's side window. One officer fired back.

Communication over radio traffic from emergency responders detailing the frantic scene unfolding.

“Shots fired! Shots fired Raleigh! Martin and Haywood in Raleigh!” the audio states.

Police have arrested and charged Dontezs Sharirh Whitley-Taylor, 30, with the following charges:

  • Felony-assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer
  • Felony- conspiracy to commit a felony
  • Misdemeanor- going armed to the terror of the people
  • Misdemeanor- discharge firearm in city limits

Another scene was reported just a few blocks away at Martin Street and Pettigrew Street.

WRAL News is working to learn if the scenes are connected.

A neighbor told WRAL News they heard what sounded like six gunshots ring out Thursday night. Another resident reported hearing around eight shots, followed by two more that seemed to come from a different gun.
