Downtown Cary gets 'yarn bombed'

The people who enjoy knitting and crocheting in Cary are a "close-knit" bunch. So, when Warm 'n Fuzzy owner Rebecca Hart put out the word that she was interested in doing a yarn bombing in early 2013, they stepped up - big time.

The light poles along Chatham Street in downtown Cary are now warm and fuzzy for the winter thanks to a "yarn bombing" event held Saturday.

(The recent trend of yarn bombing involves using yarn to decorate outdoor areas. Think of it as your mom's version of graffiti.)

Local shop Warm 'n Fuzzy coordinated the Cary event. Since opening last year, the shop has become a gathering spot for knitters and crocheters. It offers classes and sells unique yarns, tools and handcrafted accessories.

The patches were connected together and then stitched around the light poles.

When owner Rebecca Hart put out the word in October that she received approval from the city for a yarn bombing event in early 2013, people responded with colorfully knitted patches and pom poms.

The patches were knitted together and then stitched around the poles on Saturday afternoon. At least four teams were installing the more than 20 pieces.

The yarn will remain up until the end of April.
