Do you understand the proposed amendments to the state constitution?
A group charged with making sure voters understand suggested changes to the state constitution meets Monday.
The Constitutional Amendments Publication Commission makes sure voters see simple common words when reading about possible changes to the constitution on the ballots this fall.
Officials say two of the three people on the panel who come up with amendment explanations are Democrats.
Republicans thought they might come up with captions that shed a negative light, so they voted to label each as "Constitutional Amendment" on the ballot. Governor Cooper vetoed it, but this weekend, the General Assembly overrode that veto.
Some of the most controversial of the six proposed amendments would:
- Shift appointment powers on state boards and commissions from the governor to the state lawmakers.
- Insist that lawmakers, not the governor, would have power to select judges between elections.
- Requite voter ID at the polls.
The meeting starts at 9:30 a.m. at the North Carolina Museum of History.
