State and federal authorities on Friday arrested the Fayetteville district manager of the state Division of Motor Vehicles' Bureau of License and Theft, authorities said Friday.

Bill Toman, 51, of 1769 Seabrook School Road in Fayetteville, was arrested in Duplin County and was charged with felony possession of stolen goods, obstruction of justice and misuse of confidential information.

An arrest warrant issued in Duplin County on Friday says Toman bought three lawnmowers even though he had reasonable grounds to think they were stolen.

DMV officials placed Toman on investigatory leave with pay. He has worked with the Bureau of License and Theft since January 2006.

The arrest came after a joint investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation, the FBI and the DMV, authorities said.
