DMV discontinues security patch project

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles has discontinued a pilot project that placed a foil-based holographic security patch on the back of driver licenses.

The move comes after the Department of Homeland Security recently decided not adopt the hologram project nationally.

“Since this hologram project will not be adopted, we have decided to discontinue its use on North Carolina licenses,” DMV Commissioner William C. Gore Jr. said. “This move will save the agency between $750,000 and $800,000 each year.”

The patch was introduced in December 2006 to help law enforcement spot fake IDs. About 4.6 million state driver licenses have been issued with the foil patch.
