Some parents in North Carolina say they're having to drove cross state lines to feed their children as the baby formula shortage worsens across the United States.

The state Department of Health and Human Services said families participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) can use their benefits for a wider variety of formula.

DHHS said the expansion will help families get formula available in stores when Gerber products are not available. As of Monday, 55 additional products are available to families. That's in addition to the eight options added last week for different sizes and types of Gerber products.

North Carolina contracts with Gerber to provide families standard types of infant formulas, a press release said.

DHHS Secretary Kody H. Kinsley said health leaders are working to make sure families have flexibility to find formula amid the nationwide shortage.

"We will continue working with our local and federal partners to do all that we can to ensure safe and nutritious options for babies and families," Kinsely said in a statement.

Families do not need to take any additional steps to receive the temporarily expanded benefits.

DHHS said families having trouble finding formula should work with their child's health care provider to determine the best feeding plans. Families should not water down formula, make homemade formula or buy products from online auctions.
