The bomb squad detonated a device Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at a car repair shop on N.C. Highway 55, near Sedwick Drive, in Durham.

The bomb squad detonated a suspicious package Tuesday afternoon at a car repair shop on N.C. Highway 55, near Sedwick Drive, in Durham.

Authorities were called to the Autosmart, 5402 N.C. Highway 55, at about 6 p.m. to investigate a suspicious device.

The sheriff’s office called the bomb squad to assist in the probe and nearby stores were evacuated.

At about 8 p.m., the bomb squad detonated the package as a precaution. Further investigation showed the package was not a bomb, and that there was never an actual threat, police said.

Part of the highway was shut down for a short time during the investigation.
