Detectives collect DNA evidence in Raleigh rape

Detectives took hair, saliva and blood samples from Mitchell Dean Morrison, the suspect in a rape in Raleigh last month, according to search warrants released Tuesday.

Morrison, 25, of 4163 N.C. Highway 210 in Smithfield, was indicted Monday on charges of  first-degree rape, first-degree sex offense, assault on a female, first-degree burglary, false imprisonment and assault with a deadly weapon.

A Raleigh woman told police that she woke up early Oct. 25 to find Morrison standing in her bedroom holding a kitchen knife, the warrant states. The victim said Morrison repeatedly punched and slapped her and forced her to participate in sex acts.

According to the warrant, the victim asked her attacker if she could go to the bathroom and, when he allowed it, she sought help from her roommate and called 911.

The roommate told WRAL News he held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived.

In his first court appearance, Morrison asked the judge to move him to a mental health facility at the Durham VA Medical Center.
