Facebook has quietly rolled out a new feature to allow users to designate a person to take over an account after the primary user dies.

When a user dies, Facebook puts profiles into memorial mode, which freezes them in time. Facebook users have the option to designate their legacy contact (in the Settings on their profile) to manage their memorial profile.

A "legacy contact" can do things like:

  • Write a post on a profile, about memorial or funeral services, for instance.
  • Respond to new friend requests
  • Update a profile picture and cover photo
  • Download all Facebook data from a profile

Users can add, change or remove a legacy contact at any time.
