Armed military veteran shot by Cumberland County deputy during wellness check

Officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place Tuesday night in a gated community, when a suicidal man aimed his gun at deputies who had come to do a wellness check.

The man, 62-year-old John Hare, was threatening to take his own life. Sources close to the investigation said Hare pointed his weapon at the deputies, didn't put it down and was shot.

Deputies arrived at the Gates Four Golf and Country Club near Pitcairn Drive and Metthame Drive in Cumberland County around 11 p.m.

Hare's daughter speaks about his life

During her interview with WRAL, Allison Hare didn't want to talk about the tragic way her father died; she just wanted to share the wonderful way he lived.

"He loved fishing," she said. "Fishing was his favorite thing. And I was his boat captain."

Hare and Allison loved to fish together along the Cape Fear River.

Those wonderful memories were shattered last night when her father was shot and killed outside his home.

"My dad grew up in Kansas. He grew up the son of a farmer, and when they moved down here, he brought some of the cattle with him, and we kept cattle," she said.

She posted pictures of her dad on Facebook. He worked at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for more than 20 years. He was proud of to have served in the 5th Special Forces Group at Fort Campbell in Kentucky and retired from the Army.

These are the things his daughter wants to remember about her dad.

"He would do anything for anyone that asked him of anything," she said, "And he was a really good guy. He will be greatly missed."
