Deputies use pepper spray to break up fight at East Wake High School

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple fights breaking out at East Wake High School on Wednesday.

A witness who called 911 said several fights happened in the cafeteria. Video showed students standing on top of tables and a deputy trying to separate students. Some deputies had to use pepper spray to deescalate the situation. It's not known what led to the fights or how many students were involved.

There were no reported injuries.

Principal Stacey Alston said there were "separate altercations involving a number of students."

"We are working with law enforcement and WCPSS Security to investigate these incidents," Alston said in a statement sent to parents. "The students determined to be involved will be disciplined in accordance with WCPSS policy. This type of behavior will not be tolerated on our campus."

Wednesday's fight was nearly a year after a fight led to East Wake High School being locked down and a student being taken into custody in October of 2022.

Juvenile petitions have not been filed and there is an investigation is underway.
