Deputies: Man steals trailer, nearly crashes into Cumberland County home during chase

Sampson County deputies are investigating after they say a man stole a trailer and nearly drove into a house while trying to evade authorities.

Sampson County authorities said a suspect stole the trailer from a homeowner in Sampson County and nearly crashed into a house near Beaver Dam Elementary School in Cumberland County during a chase.

Deputies and a search team are looking for the suspect, who ran off after stopping in the front yard of the home. A large law enforcement presence has gathered near the home, which had a black pickup truck in the yard.

"A homeowner observed the suspect stealing a trailer on Bass Lake Road on video surveillance system," said Eric Pope with the Sampson County Sheriff's Office. "One of our deputies actually intercepted the vehicle on McLemore Road outside of Roseboro, attempted to stop it and engaged in a pursuit. We have personnel in the area that immediately flooded the area and set up stop sticks on 210. The vehicle hit the stop sticks. He came to rest at the residence we're at now."

Pope said the suspect is a white male wearing a gray shirt. A K-9 unit is looking for the man and authorities are expected to use drones to help in the search.

The school is along Highway 210 in Roseboro. The suspect jumped out of the vehicle and ran into a nearby swamp. Pope said the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone who sees the suspect is asked to call 911 and not engage with the man.
