Death toll now six in Guilford County shooting spree

The death toll has risen to six in a shooting spree last weekend in Guilford County.

Sheriff B.J. Barnes said Richard Brian Suttles, 17, died Friday, five days after his aunt, Mary Ann Holder, shot him and five other people, including her former lover, before turning the gun on herself.

Deputies found Holder and her 14-year-old son, Zachary Lee Smith, inside an SUV near their home. She was dead, and he had a gunshot wound and later died.

Authorities went looking for her Sunday morning after her ex-boyfriend, Randal Scott Lamb, was shot in the shoulder in a parking lot at Guilford Technical Community College near Greensboro.

When investigators went to Holder’s home, they found four other children – Richard Suttles, her 17-year-old son, Robert Dylan Smith, her niece, Hannaleigh Suttles, 8, and Makayla Leigh Woods, 15, a family friend.

Robert Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The others have since died of their injuries.

Lamb is the only survivor of Holder's spree, and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Investigators said Holder left notes taking responsibility for and apologizing for the shootings but offered no motive.

Barnes said the affair between Holder and Lamb was over and that Holder had taken out a restraining order against Lamb and his wife but that the order had expired. Lamb's wife had also filed an alienation of affection lawsuit against Holder, he said.
