Damage reports: Power outages, downed trees in Raleigh, Cary and Apex
Strong winds began causing damage and power outages across the Triangle early Thursday morning as a line of slow-moving, heavy rain moved through the Triangle.
On Chatterson Drive in North Raleigh, a tree fell and brought down power lines, blocking the road and knocking out power to 18 customers in the area.
At 3 a.m., more than 1,900 customers in Cary were without power after heavy winds brought down a tree at East Chatham Street and Ward Street in downtown Cary. Power had been restored to most customers by 4:30 a.m.
In Apex, 686 customers in an apartment complex were without power at 5 a.m. after a pine tree fell on a power line along Fletcherstone Way. The estimated restoration time was 8 a.m.
Heavy rain was believed to be the cause for a multi-car crash on Interstate 40 East at Exit 283 for Interstate 540 near RDU. The crash occured just before 7 a.m., causing traffic delays.
In Charlotte, heavy rain was already causing isolated flooding overnight, and crews were heading out with flashlights to check on people in flooded areas.
Brad Panovich, meteorologist at NBC Charlotte, posted a photo of flooding in the Madison Park neighborhood.
The heaviest rain was in the Triangle at 6 a.m. and was moving toward eastern counties at 7:30 a.m. Rain will continue all morning, clearing out of the area by noon or 1 p.m., but more power outages are possible throughout the day from gusty winds and saturated grounds.
