Cyclists hold memorial ride for man attacked, killed on Raleigh greenway
At least 130 cyclists held a memorial ride on Sunday morning in honor of a man who was brutally attacked and beaten on a Raleigh greenway and later died.
The cycling community gathered at Dix Park to ride in remembrance of Chauncey Depew. Their six-mile ride included a stop at the site where he was assaulted.
Depew's son also rode to honor his father.
"He was just a peaceful guy," said Chauncey Depew III. "He honestly could just strike up a conversation with anyone."
Depew's son said his father was always the first person he'd go to for advice about life.
Some participants pointed out concern for the safety of people walking or riding on Raleigh's greenways.
"It's pretty bad when you can't even go on a greenway here and take a casual ride, or you'll get attacked and killed," said Charles Meola, a participant in the memorial.
After this tragic loss, cyclists are calling for better protection on the greenway, with more lights and security cameras.
