7.4-magnitude earthquake rocks Taiwan, family member shares fear felt in the moment

Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in 25 years killed at least 10 people. More than 700 others are trapped and 15 missing.

People along the entire island felt the tremors of the earthquake – even those hours away from the epicenter of where it happened. That includes Renee Chou’s cousin, Genie Wang.

“I think the really scary thing is that you can see all the buildings. There are people, and even some people died in this disaster,” Wang said.

She lives in Taipei, which is about two and a half hours away from Haulien County. That’s where the 7.4-magnitude earthquake left the most damage behind.

“It was so scary. I went up and ran out of my room…I saw ‘my sister and my parents,’” Wang recalled. “I tried to just stand still, but it was really, really hard to stand still.”

Wang said she and the rest of her community was still terrified, especially due to the aftershocks. However, she said she is glad that her and her neighbors are safe.

Meanwhile, crews are working to clean up the damage and rescue people.
