The city has set up scooter parking corrals in the Glenwood South neighborhood to help keep the two-wheelers off sidewalks, officials said Wednesday.

The Raleigh Department of Transportation recently installed eight corrals on Glenwood Avenue, two each on West Johnson and West North streets and one on Tucker Street. No parking spaces were lost in the process, as curb space already zoned "no parking" was incorporated into the effort, as was a private parking deck entrance that is no longer in use.

Related scooter parking signs also have been painted on Glenwood Avenue and West Johnson Street.

"Scooter parking corrals dedicate a safe place for scooter companies to deploy their vehicles, while keeping sidewalks clear for pedestrians," Barbara Godwin, bike and mobility coordinator for the city. "They also provide space for users to end their trip in a responsible manner."

"We expect the lessons learned with these parking options will help us and our partners at Bolt, Lime and Spin continue to expand mobility options across the city," Michael Moore, Raleigh's transportation director, said in a statement.

People have taken 180,830 scooter trips in Raleigh since the city launched approved services this summer, officials said.

City officials scrapped contracts with scooter companies in 2019 – and some removed their devices from Raleigh altogether – to rework regulations on the services.
