Tickets for Raleigh parks department's popular Holiday Express event usually go on sale in late July, but the pandemic is forcing some big changes.

Because of uncertainty related to COVID-19 and the ability to hold large gatherings, the city announced Friday that it is postponing Holiday Express tickets. They were scheduled to go on sale on July 28. Tickets typically sell out within an hour or so of going on sale.

The event draws thousands to Pullen Park near downtown Raleigh in December for train rides, carousel rides, holiday lights, arts, crafts and opportunities to visit with Santa. The park's playground and amusements have been closed since March.

Exactly when tickets might go on sale and even if the event will be held is yet to be determined. The city said in the announcement that updates will be shared on its Holiday Express website and through @RaleighParks social media.

"We appreciate your support, passion, and enthusiasm for Holiday Express and hope to see you in December," the announcement says.
