Long lines back up Rocky Quarry Road in Wake County

As people struggle to find a COVID-19 testing appointment through Wake County, many are showing up to the state's newest coronavirus testing site on Rocky Quarry Road.

Lines were flooded onto the surrounding streets as people rushed to try and get tested at the Word of God Assembly Church after the holidays.

The testing site on Word of God Assembly Church does not require an appointment, which is why its such a popular option. At every other testing site, appointments in Wake County are required.

Results are expected to come back slower at the Word of God Assembly Church COVID-19 testing site — in 24 hours instead of 12.

A sign-up page on the Wake County Public Health's website shows there were no appointments left on Thursday at any of the five clinics. The next available appointment would be on New Year's Day.

Local CVS and Walgreens were also short on tests. According to both websites, there are only a few available appointments in the Triangle on Thursday. WRAL News found that there was one available appointment at 3:50 p.m. at the CVS on Tyron Road in Cary and another one at 3 p.m. at the CVS on Six Forks Road.

There is an option to order a COVID-19 test through Amazon, but most are not expected to arrive for a couple of weeks.

Starting on Friday, the state is opening up a new drive-thru testing site at PNC Arena off Edwards Mill Road in Raleigh.

The PNC Area site will be open from 7 a.m. to noon on game and event days:

  • Jan. 17 for Carolina Hurricanes game
  • Jan. 12 for All Elite Wrestling event
  • Jan. 13 for Carolina Hurricanes game
  • Jan. 19 for NCSU basketball game
  • Jan. 21 for Carolina Hurricanes game
  • Jan. 25 for Carolina Hurricanes game
  • Jan. 31 for a potential event (to be updated)
