SPCA closes its doors but keeps adoptions going

Concerns over coronavirus and social distancing have forced the SPCA of Wake County to close to outside visitors -- but the staff there is finding new, creative ways to fulfill their mission.

The shelter, located on Petfinder Lane off Tryon Road in Raleigh, is using its Facebook page to run a daily livestream showing off adoptable dogs, cats and small animals. Staff members Darci Vanderslik and Molly Stone introduce online visitors to potential pets and discuss their financial needs.

Director Kim Flowers said adoptions are always important -- but especially now.

"Otherwise, if we don't do any adoptions while we're closed, that's going to be a big problem," Flowers said.

Jeff and Jennifer Pollard paid the adoption fees for their new family pet, a black lab, along with a generous donation to help the center operate.

"They need as much financial help as possible, because they don't -- we don't -- know how long this is going to last," Jeff Pollard said.

Flowers said the SPCA will feature the livestreams as long as they need to.

"However long this lasts, we'll be able to continue this and keep doing what we do," she said.

What they do is bring a new source of joy - to families like the Pollards.

Adoptable animals come to the SPCA of Wake County from many area shelters that have been impacted by coronavirus restrictions.
