Sheriff's deputy known for 'smile, sense of humor and laughter' dies of COVID-19 complications

Deputy Sypraseuth 'Bud' Phouangphrachanh, known affectionately as 'Deputy Bud,' died at age 43 from complications from COVID-19. He was known for his service to youth, smile and laughter.

Community mourns loss of school resource officer from COVID-19

A 14-year veteran of the Montgomery County Sheriff's office passed away in a hospital in Pinehurst from complications of COVID-19.

Deputy Sypraseuth 'Bud' Phouangphrachanh, age 43, was hospitalized Monday for COVID-19 and died on Tuesday. Officials said he thought his initial symptoms were allergies, but began in-home isolation after being tested for coronavirus.

Prior to his years of work with the sheriff's office, Phouangphrachanh served as a police officer for the Town of Candor. He was affectionately known as 'Deputy Bud' by his co-workers, community and students while serving as a School Resource Officer.

According to officials, "his dedication to youth lead him to attend DARE Instructor Training, which he loved and believed in as a tool to better his community."

He worked with middle and high school students and was known for his "big smile, sense of humor and laughter."

Friends, colleagues and loved ones posted tributes and well-wishes on social media. One said, "The saddest thing about COVID-19 is how isolating it is in its final stages. Because it's so infectious, most of its victims slowly whither without any loved ones at their sides."

"Bud was just somebody that everybody flocked to," said Capt. Andre Garner said in a phone interview Wednesday. "If Bud was around, you couldn't have a frown on your face. He's gonna make you smile.

"We didn't expect it. This stuff hit close to home. It's really been an eye opener. Don't know what we're gonna do, we're gonna do without him. That's a loss."
