Some nail salons across the Triangle are polishing up their safety measures to keep customers healthy as they prepare for a possible reopening under Phase 2.

Two nail salon owners in Durham are saying they are not rushing the process of reopening. As much as they’re ready to get back to work, they say, the safety of their clients comes first.

“Everybody’s just on hold, waiting until we get the green light to come back to work," said Kiea Taylor, who owns Tips and Needles salon, which brings in a high volume of clientele.

Taylor is among many nail technicians buffing up on disinfection procedures.

She's got plastic face shields, masks, gloves and hand sanitizer ready to go.

Her salon has been closing early for two months, and the future of business will be appointment only.

“No guests. It’s going to be real cut and dry. Come in, get your service, have a good time and then on to the next client," she said.

Joy Sigler, who owns Nailz, said she’s not opening her salon until June 1, regardless of Phase 2 possibilities. In the meantime, she’s stocking up on all the necessities for a safe workplace

"Putting up some plexiglass in our manicure and pedicure area. We will also have auto soap dispensers and auto hand towels," said Sigler.

Executive Director for North Carolina's Cosmetology Board said the infectious control regulations already established will be effective against COVID-19.

The infectious control requirement for disinfection that salons already have in place do require EPA registered and labeled bactericidal, viricidal and fungicidal, according to the director.

The unknown factor of human to human contact is what’s holding up the state’s next phase.

The cosmetology board is partnering with the governor’s office to discuss a full set of guidelines that will be needed for a safe reopen.
