Majority of Wake County schools COVID cases reported so far this summer are among students, data shows

The majority of coronavirus cases connected to Wake County Public School System this summer were in students, according to data from the school district.

These cases are from year-round schools and summer learning, according to a spokesperson with WCPSS.

So far this summer, there have been 150 cases reported among students, and 120 of those were reported in the month of July.

Thirty-eight staff at WCPSS tested positive this summer, data shows.

Of course, there are many more students enrolled in Wake County schools than there are staff, so the cases per person are higher for adults than children.

WRAL News has reported that several schools have seen a coronavirus outbreak since classes resumed. A cluster of cases was reported at Turner Creek Elementary School last week, and five students tested positive at Franklin Academy charter school.

Two summer camps in North Carolina have also reported COVID-19 outbreaks.

Health officials worry that cases are only going to increase as students return to packed classrooms without a COVID-19 vaccine.
