Fraternity parties concern members of UNC, Chapel Hill communities

Photographs surfaced on Saturday night of a party outside three fraternity houses on Cameron Avenue in Chapel Hill.

According to witnesses, the party was in violation of Orange County's maximum gathering size of 25 people in outdoor settings.

Some members of the community are concerned about the potential consequences for activities like these.

"I think had they been slightly more responsible, we would have classes," said one graduate student. "We would have people walking around and enjoying being on campus, now everything is gone."

"I think everybody should have empathy for each other," added Rachel Niemira, a sophomore living off campus in Chapel Hill. "Whether that’s students on campus staying safe to keep the whole community safe, or other people kind of looking at UNC and realizing that we’re not all like crazy party kids. Some of just are just like here to learn and trying to do a good job of keeping everybody safe."

The university is aware of the potential violations taking place in affiliated Greek life houses, but it can not dictate whether or not the members and residents continue to live there.

"All of these reports will be pursued and, as appropriate, both chapters and individual participants will be subject to administrative and/or disciplinary action," the university said in a statement.
