A field of American flags in Clayton is honoring heroes of all kinds through July 4.

Earlier this month, the Rotary Club of Clayton and the Rotary Club of Clayton Mid-Day offered people the chance to sponsor a 3 x 5-foot flag in honor of a veteran, first responder, health worker, delivery driver, retail employee, neighbor, friend or family member.

The more than 100 flags are flying this week at 2138 N.C. Highway 42 near Johnston Hospital. The flags will stay there until at least July 4.

“God Bless America and the many people in our lives that are heroes to us,” said organizer Leigh Hudson, who called the event a "highly visible and patriotic tribute."

With the flag, sponsors were given the option to order a commemorative medallion that displays their name and their hero's name.

Reserving a flag without a medallion costs $50, reserving one with a medallion costs $55.
