Coronavirus data: Why WRAL shows more cases than others

The WRAL digital team has designed our online map to automatically update when our data team updates information, which we do in real time.

Coronavirus research

You may notice a difference in the numbers reported by WRAL News and those released by NCDHHS or other media outlets. That’s because WRAL has designed our online map to automatically update when our data team updates information, which we do in real time.

The state DHHS website is updated just once daily, around 11 a.m., but counties around the state update the number of positive coronavirus cases and the number of deaths more often. WRAL’s data team only records numbers that are officially announced by counties or the state. We think the public is best served with the most up to date and accurate information available.

What about recoveries?

The state began reporting on presumed recoveries on May 11. They update that number weekly on Monday afternoons and you will find that number on the WRAL.com homepage.
