Pandemic forces Raleigh leaders to cancel large festivals, parades through October
City officials finalized a decision Tuesday to cancel city-permitted special events through Oct. 31, including road races, festivals and parades, to limit the spread of coronavirus.
Many summer and fall events are already canceled, including North Carolina State University's Packapalooza (Aug. 22), the African-American Cultural Festival (Sept. 5-6), Hopscotch Music Festival, La Fiesta Del Pueblo (Sept. 20) and the World of Bluegrass (Sept. 29-Oct. 3).
Large events that have not already canceled or postponed may be forced to do so, and officials said event organizers have been made aware of that possibility.
Permits may be issued for events of 25 or fewer people, such as neighborhood block parties, officials said.
City leaders said they would monitor virus trends and work with health officials to determine if events need to be postponed beyond October. A decision on canceling events beyond Oct. 31 will be made by Sept. 1.
