Aging Well

ASK AGING WELL: Can I get a home COVID testing kit?

While preferable and quick to get tested in-person, if someone is older or frail and not experiencing acute symptoms, it is possible for a family member to pick up a test kit to help them perform at home. They will have to return to the same site they picked it up to drop it off.

While ideally those who suspect they may have COVID-19 should go get tested in-person, there are instances when it might be wiser to perform a home test instead. Specifically, for those who are older or more frail and not experiencing acute medical symptoms, a family member may pick up a test kit to help their loved one collect the sample at home. They will then need to deliver the completed test back to the site where they picked it up.

Wake County is now conducting drive-through testing at numerous sites, which you can see here.

Each test kit comes with instructions in English and Spanish, accompanied by illustrations.

There is no cost. No appointment is needed. You don't need to bring an ID.

While the timing of results varies, one can expect to receive a text with the status of the test within seven to forty-eight hours.
