111 COVID-19 cases at Durham nursing and rehab facility

Kimberly Palmer's nephew is one of 111 residents or workers at the Durham Nursing and Rehabilitation center to have tested positive for COVID-19.

Durham County officials confirm that is the number of cases at the facility.

"His nursing home was just riddled with it," Palmer added.

But more recently, he has been in the hospital battling the disease, Palmer says, and is fighting for his life.

Palmer does not want to identify her nephew, but says he is in his late 30's, and she is not certain as to exactly how he contracted the virus.

She says that her family did not know there was a serious outbreak at the facility until they found a report online.

Because of his diagnosis, Palmer and the rest of her family can not visit him at the hospital.

More recently, there is some hope he could pull through.

"We are hoping in the next day or so, he is going to be able to come off the ventilator," Palmer said. "His oxygen is of course problematic and his lungs are full of fluid."

As of the latest count, Durham County has 546 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 11 related deaths.
