Counties affected by winter storm warnings and advisories early Friday, Dec. 18, 2009.

Parts of the Triangle were placed under Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisories Friday ahead of the first winter storm of the season expected to hit later Friday afternoon and linger into Saturday.

"The winter weather is on the way, but different parts of the viewing area are going to see very different types of weather out of this system," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

Many area school systems and schools closed early on Friday, and St. Mary's School in Raleigh closed all together. The early departure for students means that all extra-curricular activities after school, including sporting events, are postponed.

The WRAL Wrestling Tournament scheduled to be held at Athens Drive on Friday and Saturday has been canceled and will not be made up, school officials said Friday afternoon.

Though nearly all public school events are canceled, Ravenscroft hasn't called everything off yet.

As of 3:30 p.m., Ravenscroft still planned to play its basketball games Friday night against Cary Christian, however if conditions warrant, the game may be postponed. Ravenscroft's wrestling match scheduled for Friday and the basketball games scheduled for Saturday against the Australian National Team have been postponed.

The Chapel Hill vs. East Chapel Hill basketball games scheduled for Friday will be made up on Jan. 13. The games will still be played at East Chapel Hill. Girls will play at 6 p.m., boys at 7:30 p.m.

The Millbrook vs. Sanderson basketball games scheduled for Friday will be made up on Dec. 21.

Cary Academy canceled it's homecoming events and rescheduled them for Jan. 8.
