Construction to begin on new Raleigh aquatics center
I've seen my five-year-old look longingly at the giant water slides and pools as we drive by some of our region's private pools. She's got about another 18 months or so to wait for Raleigh's newest aquatics center, which will include a giant water slide.
Construction on the city of Raleigh's Buffaloe Road Aquatics Center is scheduled to start in August and should take about 14 months. The new center with an 18,600-square-foot recreational leisure pool should open sometime around Thanksgiving 2011.
It will include a giant water slide; a small lazy river with vortex where the current will carry you around in a circle; lap lanes; zero depth entry; tot-sized play features; and volleyball net and basketball hoops in the pool.
The aquatics center will sit at Buffaloe Road Athletic Park at 5900 Buffaloe Rd. in east Raleigh. The park currently includes lighted ball fields and a walking track.
